Dear Neighbors,

My name is Mary Barley, and I’m proud to announce my candidacy for Village Council Seat 3. I’ve called Islamorada home since 1998, first purchasing a house here in 1986, and I've cherished our waters as a fly fisherman since the 1970s.

I’m running because I believe our community deserves new leadership and innovative solutions. Some of the candidates currently running were involved in the decisions that have held our community back. We can’t afford to keep repeating the same mistakes by re-electing the same people again and again. It’s time for a change that will move us forward and address the challenges we face with new perspectives and ideas.

For decades, my commitment to this community has been unwavering. My husband and I took action when we saw Florida Bay in distress, working to uncover the causes behind the damage to our beloved fishing and diving areas in the 80s and 90s. Out of that commitment, the Everglades Foundation was born, and I am proud to continue serving on its board to this day. I understand the importance of protecting our natural resources because they are the lifeblood of our community.

But this election is not just about the past—it’s about the future. I’m dedicated to protecting Islamorada’s unique character, ensuring we preserve the small-town qualities we all love. Our decisions must be based on facts and what’s best for our community. It’s crucial that we consider our limitations and make responsible choices that reflect our shared values.

My vision for our village is one where our environment, economy, and community thrive together.

Electing me, Mary Barley, to Village Council seat 3, is a vote for a leader who believes in and cares deeply about our village. I am committed to listening to your concerns, working collaboratively, and making decisions that reflect our shared values.

This election is crucial, and I need your support to make a difference. Please vote for Mary Barley on November 5 and join me in shaping a brighter future for Islamorada. Let’s work together to protect what makes our village special and create a community we can all be proud of.

Now is the time for new ideas and new leadership. By voting for me, you are choosing a new direction for Islamorada—a direction that prioritizes our shared future over the failed decisions of the past.

Thank you for your support, and I look forward to seeing you around the village.

Sincerely,
Mary Barley
Candidate for Islamorada Village Council Seat 3

SAVE THE EVERGLADES WITHOUT GETTING YOUR FEET WET

The Barley Review is a free, monthly compilation of relevant news and information devoted to the restoration of America’s Everglades, Florida Bay, and happenings in the Florida Keys.

Delivered straight into your inbox, the Review shares the good, the bad and the ugly – and never ever sugarcoats it.

By explaining the political and environmental science, what is broken and why, and what it takes to fix it, we work to educate and inspire the public and lawmakers to action.

THE NO SUGARCOATING ZONE

It’s tough to learn about the state of affairs for our waterways and Everglades and discover the debauchery of people and industries who know better, but the only antidote to the vast sums of money the biggest polluters pour into the political system, the outright lies and manipulation, is a well-informed and committed citizenry.

For our own sanity – and yours – we go out of our way to find images and stories that inspire us AND things that make us LOL. We share some of our favorites in each update.
